The Rose D’Or Awards is a prestigious event in which the European Broadcasting Union hands out awards to the best in TV and online entertainment. I wrote the 2017 edition theme song!
It is always fun to get phone calls for people who need music. But when it is the European Broadcasting Union commissioning their new theme song, you can’t really believe it at first!
They wanted a theme song that they could cut up into different pieces and moods. Therefore I wrote a song with a long and steady build up, which they could use to build up tension and expectation. After this first section we go into the main theme: a positive, prestigious and motivating theme with a nostalgic touch to it. The theme goes into a less busy parts which they could use as a music bed to put underneath announcements and then back into the main theme, ending in a big powerful orchestral chord that emphasizes the prestigious character of the awards!
I hired Birger Embrechts as a lead trumpet player to record the theme’s melody. I don’t know why, but the trumpet, with it’s rich, powerful and brassy sound, seemed to be a perfect match for the theme. I doubled the melody with electric guitar and a stringorchestra playing in octaves. This way the melody really soars on top of the underlying chords. Some electronic touches were added to give the song a bit of a modern touch, while remaining the nostalgic feel.
I am very proud to have been selected to write this theme. Big thanks to Dirk Vandecatsyne from Divassistance and ofcourse the European Broadcasting Union!
